REFLECTIONS

Tim Conway borrows from positive as well as difficult work life situations to uplift others.  During decades as a corporate employee, part-time university faculty, entrepreneur and volunteer, he gained varied lessons and wisdom.  The good news:  Tim concluded that our world is a Land of Second (and even third) Opportunities.

To understand Tim Conway’s career coaching, it’s vital to grasp his stages.  (Luckily, Tim survived to tell about each!)

Conway is from a lower-income family of two parents and six children in Cleveland, Ohio.  Both parents were employed:  mother as a phone switchboard operator; father as a picture framer at a small business.  He recalls that household comments about work were often negative.  Tim did not have a role model or mentor.

During youth, Conway had minimal wage positions as newspaper delivery, retail clerk and gas station attendant.  The favorite role was assisting customers at gas station.

When Tim was 16, an older sister died of leukemia; the setback was highly emotional for him, siblings and parents.  Her death contributed to his aimlessness during teenager and twentysomethings.  (Oddly, the sister was buried on the day that she was scheduled to be married.)

After finishing undergraduate studies at University of Dayton, Conway quickly accepted an offer to be a corporate salesperson.

THE RIGHT WAY, THE WRONG WAY & THE CONWAY

However, Tim determined that direct sales was a misfit.  A position with Xerox required daily cold calls to sell office equipment to owners.  His struggles were because he’s a sensitive individual who finds rejection stressful.  The poor occupation fit damaged his productivity, work ethic and self-esteem.  At a low point, Tim questioned his contribution to society while depressed.  Sad-but-true:  Tim’s children created a Mood-o-Meter to track his attitude; this affectionate toy delivered a blunt message.

IT’S ALL ABOUT YOUR PERSONAL BRAND

Fortunately, Conway persisted to identify strengths — idea generation, customer service, business writing — through do-it-yourself books, seminars and assessments (personality, natural abilities).

By moving into project management for an admired food service company, Tim improved research and innovation.  In this function, he admired franchisees with a growth mindset.

ONGOING CAREER PLANNING

Later, Tim joined the public relations field to maximize verbal communication.  While with a large retailer, he secured media coverage for products, services and executives.  Tim led colleagues to win a Chairman’s Team Award for fresh video production.

Conway was encouraged to be a part-time instructor for Career Development course at DePaul University.  When teaching, he explained proven job hunting to Future Global Leaders (his term).  For instance, employment candidates can show best-of project samples during interviews.  To fine-tune advising, Tim attained a master’s degree in Counseling and Human Services at Roosevelt University as a night learner.

Throughout a complex journey, Tim Conway had mixed success. But he absorbed perspectives (e.g., forward thinking) that boosts others.  Ironically, Tim’s periodic turmoil allows him to be compassionate with those undergoing a career decision.

About ten years ago, Tim became a self-proclaimed Career Change Champion.  His objective is to increase workplace results for professionals.  By listening, Tim understands specific needs; he devises custom actions to energize peers.  Relevant output:  labor market details; relationship-building tips; job search methods; interview coaching; and venture expansion (entrepreneurs).

To move ahead, Tim recommends juggling activities.  Example:  edit LinkedIn while connecting with executives.  Through his exclusive process, you can reboot Y-o-u.
